Hiring great talent is ideal, but it is less important than hiring great people

Ideally we will find the right talent, but it is more important to find the right people (the right person will become the talent).  While we try to hire right, we may end up not being a good fit and that is alright but we should be honest with ourselves and be willing to go our separate ways.  We want to work with people we enjoy being with and who share a common culture.

Keep scrolling to learn a little about our culture and what it is like to work for us.  You might notice that we are passionate about creating a great place to work.  Let us know if you have questions or comments.

Part of us

A di'velept Employee Culture

to be a part of us is more than just being employed.

Part of us

A di'velept Employee Culture

to be a part of us is more than just being employed.

When we say us (we, our, etc), that now includes you.  We want a culture that allows everyone to feel engaged in the practice without restriction.   We expect to be motivated by the work and what we are building here, not just by the paycheck.   We want you to care about the projects, about the success of the firm and about how we treat each other.  Our goal is to pay well and share profits so that your engagement and caring doesn’t go without the reward that should accompany it.  Our firm culture should be something we can all buy into, help us define it.

MANAGE YOUR OWN TIME

Because we work with people who are motivated by the work, we don’t really care when or where you decide to work, just however makes you your best.  We will have to communicate about how to work together given flexible schedules, but we say awesome!  Just be sure to get your work done, be available for your projects, and be efficient.

If we ever have a physical office space we would view it the same way, use the office as a tool to get your work done as necessary but otherwise work how best works for you and yours.

FULL TRANSPARENCY

If you are truly a part of the practice we believe you should have access to all the company data including financials and wages.  We think that we should be able to justify our actions, and if we can’t we probably shouldn’t be doing it.  We also want to be able to gain input from everyone about how things should be structured and what fair compensation should be.  Some of the best communication we can have are some of the harder conversations.  Be fair to the firm, to each other, and to yourself.

Life is Awsome

While we want you engaged with the work while you are working, we also believe in life outside of what we do here. Sure, there will be times when the demands of a project require a little more of us, but this should be the exception and if possible we should find ways to get some of that time back.  Family is important, and now that you are one of us, your family is part of our family and we want to get to know them. Feel free to bring them (parents, spouse, kids, dog, siblings, whoever) by the office (if we had one).  Introduce them when they interrupt your video call, etc.

A Collaboration

We like to think of ourselves as an Architecture Collaborative

A Collaboration

We like to think of ourselves as an Architecture Collaborative

While you are expected to perform well as an employee you are also a designer or an architect in your own right.  You should be free to do your own projects outside of the work you do for us.   Not only do we openly allow this, we will help facilitate it if you want our help.  The way we see it, we are just a bunch of architects and designers working together.  While it is the task of the principals of di'velept to bringing in work that keeps the firm going, there is no reason we couldn't partner with you the same as we would anyone else (read here) who wanted to join up to do some work.

But wouldn't this enable someone to build a clientele and go out on their own therefore causing talent to leave di'velept?  Maybe, but if we haven't created a place that you want to stick around to become a partner that's on us.  It doesn't give us the right to stop you from being an architect.  Ultimately if you end up thinking you have created that much value, and we don't make an offer that keeps you around then we will wish you the best as you set off on your own.  We really just want to make a place where great stuff can happen without us getting in the way.

That being said, we ask that if you are doing your own work independent of the firm that you not use the firm's resources (computers, email, revit licenses, templates, title blocks, details, etc) unless agreed to by di'velept on a project by project basis.

Work the right way

Work the right way

Work the right way

Work the right way

Study the training materials (once they exist) and ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS.  It is always easier to spend 5 minutes answering a question then an hour fixing something.  Make sure you know the direction you are going before you get too far down the road.  Reckless false confidence will not be tolerated.

Each project is Unique

We believe in awesome templates, a fairly defined workflow, and having some processes in place but these things are designed to make us efficient, not mindless.  When it comes down to it, the important part of every project is communicating clearly.  Never assume that you can just paste in a template item or use the same strategies over again without being sure they really fit the project or that there aren't errors in the template work.  The drawings, keynote file, sheet notes, and the specification all work together.  All must be tailored to each project.

Don't wreck Revit

The thing that makes Revit and programs like it (where one thing affects about 10 others) awesome, also makes it extremely volatile.   If you don’t know the process, ASK QUESTIONS until you do. If you wreck Revit, someone is likely to lose it on you and rightfully so.   (Wrecking Revit is different than Revit breaking, when Revit breaks we all just curse its name and get to work redoing anything that was lost.)

Help us improve

We always strive to be efficient and produce better drawings.   Therefore we have an established “way” of doing things. This doesn't mean that we have it all figured out or that we are as good as we can be.   We believe that we can always get better and we want your help learning how.

Own what you do and take initiative

Own what you do

Own what you do and take initiative

Own what you do

Don’t expect that someone else is going to just magically back check your work before it goes out the door.  Know that everything you touch may be a final product so work it through to the end.  If you are not confident in the solution, ask others for input and work it through until it is complete.

take the initiative

Know where the project needs to be and find ways to help it get there.  Don’t just sit around if you run out of things to do.  If necessary, ASK QUESTIONS!

Be the type of person that isn’t afraid to bring problems to the table but bring some solutions along with them.  Let your good ideas be known and be willing to make them happen.
